Caption on the back of the photograph reads, “Duquesne, PA., July 16 - Last cloud of fume and dust billows from a ferromanganese blast furnace at Duquesne (Pa.) Works of U. S. Steel, minutes before start-up of a new cleaning plant – first ever built to eliminate these man made clouds from the atmosphere.” The installation of cleaning plants such as these were part of an ongoing effort to clean up the notoriously smoky atmosphere in and around Pittsburgh.
