Description
Phipps Conservatory, built in 1893 by greenhouse specialists Lord and Burnham, of Irvington, New York, was originally financed by Henry Phipps, a partner of Andrew Carnegie. Originally there were nine display houses constructed by Lord and Burnham and in 1896, three more houses were added. In 1900 the City of Pittsburgh added nine growing houses to the rear of the structure. The conservatory underwent extensive restoration and modernization during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Currently, the Conservatory boasts permanent displays for palms, orchids, cacti, and ferns, and major seasonal shows such as the Fall, Christmas, and Spring Flower Shows.
