Description
The National Aviary, opened on August 10, 1952, was one of the first zoos to present its collection in free-flight rooms and natural exhibits with over 25,000 square feet of space. The Sarah Mellon Scaife Foundation donated approximately $933,000 in 1967 for the construction on a new wing that doubled the West Park Aviary-Conservatory’s size. In the 1980s the Aviary began to focus toward wildlife conservation by beginning the captive breeding of rare and endangered birds. In 1993 the United States Congress designated the West Park Aviary-Conservatory, located on Pittsburgh’s North Side, as the nations’ official avian institution, and its name was changed to the National Aviary. Today, the National Aviary, home to over 600 birds of more than 220 species, is America’s only independent indoor nonprofit bird zoo.
