The West Park Aviary-Conservatory, known today as the National Aviary, is located in Pittsburgh’s North Side neighborhood. The $340,000 facility opened on August 10, 1952, on the site of the old Phipps Conservatory. The newly rebuilt conservatory included the addition of birds to the indoor gardens. Today, the National Aviary, home to over 600 birds of more than 220 species, is America’s only independent indoor nonprofit bird zoo.
