Description
In an attempt to change the City of Pittsburgh’s image, Pa. Pitt’s Partners began an annual Spring “Clean-up, Paint-up and Fix-up Program,” sponsored by the Civic Club of Allegheny County, to improve and beautify Pittsburgh’s neighborhoods. The program, active through the 1940s, was performed under the guidance of local teachers. In addition to the clean-up program to beautify the community, the Civic Club established smoke abatement regulations, education programs for workers and immigrants, child labor regulation, inner city playgrounds, contagious disease hospitals, public concerts, and the maintenance of public gardens. The hard work paid off when Pittsburgh won second place in the Cleanest City National Contest in 1949.
