Description
A slum area near the Point in downtown Pittsburgh, with the main Exposition Building in the center background. The era of the great expositions in Pittsburgh spanned the years 1875 until 1916. Originally staged on Smokey (later Kilbuck) Island, the annual exhibitions, sponsored by the Western Pennsylvania Exposition Society, presented exhibits focusing on Pittsburgh as well as entertainment of all kinds. The main building, Machinery Hall, and Music Hall were located near the Point in 1889 and rebuilt after a fire in 1901. The last exhibition was held in 1916. The buildings were used for various purposes in the years following, with the last remains being torn down in 1950 to accommodate the new Duquesne Way artery.
