  • The Wabash Railroad Bridge, spanning the Monongahela River, was built in 1904 and designed by architect George T. Barnsley. The total length (including longest elevated ramp) of this cantilever bridge was 1,504 feet with a deck height of 46 feet above river level. The Wabash-Pittsburg Terminal Railroad (later the Pittsburgh and West Virginia Railroad) was the idea of George Jay Gould. The Wabash was intended to challenge the near-monopoly of the Pennsylvania Railroad on freight in the Pittsburgh area. The Wabash Bridge Collapsed on October 19, 1903, before it was operational. Construction was finally completed in 1904. The Terminal and office building opened in 1905, but by 1908 the company was bankrupt. In 1948 the bridge superstructure was removed. The piers that supported this bridge are still in place, one at the Gateway Clipper landing, and one near the end of Stanwix Street.
