Description
Neville Island, five miles long, was covered with gardens in the nineteenth century, producing fruit and vegetables for the Pittsburgh market; then, beginning around 1900, it was industrialized so fully and diversely that today, with the exception of a very small residential area, it looks like a showcase of industrial specimens. Neville Island’s soil was so rich that as late as 1926 the old Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York featured Neville Island asparagus on its menu. The island experienced frantic industrial growth during World War II, when the Dravo Corporation launched hundreds of landing craft from its shipyards there. By the 1970s there were more than fifty different firms in heavy industry on the island. On the western tip of the island was a toxic dumping ground that encompassed 32 acres from the 1930s to the 1960s for Pittsburgh Coke and Chemical Company. In 1997 the Neville Land Company embarked on a three-year construction project that will clean up the Ohio River Park Superfund Site and leave in its place a $15 million family sports-recreation center. In the left upper background is the I-79 Neville Island Bridge.
