Description
The Fort Duquesne Bridge, spanning the Allegheny River, currently carries Interstate 279. The steel bowstring arch, double-deck bridge, sometimes known as “The Bridge To Nowhere,” opened to traffic on October 17, 1969. The main span was completed in 1963, but because of difficulties in securing a site to place the bridge’s northern ramps, traffic was not able to use these ramps until 1969. The northeastern section continued to hang in mid-air until its connection with the North Shore Expressway as part of the East Street Valley Expressway project in 1986. In the background is Three Rivers Stadium, still under construction, which opened in May 1970.
