Description
The 22-story, 813-room Pittsburgh Hilton Hotel (center), located in Gateway Center in downtown Pittsburgh, still under construction. The $15 million hotel was designed by architect William B. Tabler and at the time of its opening housed one of the world’s largest ballrooms, holding 2,000 people at banquets and 2,660 at meetings. Pittsburgh Hilton Hotel and Towers opened in 1959. Directly behind the Hilton Hotel are the three Gateway Center buildings; to the right is the Pennsylvania State Office Building. The photograph was taken from the Fort Pitt Bridge, which opened in 1959.
