Description
The Point and Gateway Center from Pittsburgh's Mount Washington neighborhood. Near the center (on the Monongahela River shore) is the beginning phase of construction for the Fort Pitt Bridge. During the mid-1940s, the Point was in a state of deterioration, an area of vacant buildings, inactive railways, and riverbanks littered with debris. There were few empty spaces and no clear view of the rivers. Through the cooperation of Mayor David L. Lawrence and industrialist Richard K. Mellon, working with the Allegheny Conference on Community Development, supported by the city, county, and state governments and others, a plan for redevelopment emerged.
