Description
A view of the Point and Gateway Center from Pittsburgh's Mount Washington neighborhood. During the mid-1940s the Point was in an extreme state of disrepair. The Point contained freight yards, a terminal, largely unused railroad tracks, and its riverbanks were littered with debris. The Grand Exhibition Hall had held its last show in 1918. The Point had become an area of vacant buildings and inactive railways. There were few empty spaces or a clear view of the rivers. Through the cooperation of Mayor David L. Lawrence and the industrialist Richard K. Mellon working with the Allegheny Conference on Community Development and supported by the city, county, and state governments and others, a plan for redevelopment of the Point emerged. The Gateway Center buildings (center background under construction) were completed around 1952.
