Description
The Civic Light Opera (CLO) performing “High Button Shoes” at Pitt Stadium in Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood. The CLO began performing in 1946 at Pitt Stadium with the show “Naughty Marietta.” The CLO decided to move to the Civic Arena in 1961 due to inclement weather causing rainouts at Pitt Stadium. Through the years, some of the biggest names in show business have played the CLO, including, Jackie Gleason, Nat King Cole, Sid Caesar, Carol Channing, Robert Goulet and Carol Lawrence, Giorgio Tozzi, Shirley Jones, and Liberace. In the early 1970s, the CLO moved once again to Heinz Hall in downtown Pittsburgh, and in 1987, Benedum Center for the Performing Arts became the fifth and present home of the CLO.
