Description
The Mesta Machine Company specialized in the manufacture of heavy machinery. The company was one of the leading manufacturers of machine tool and steel mill equipment in the world during the first half of the twentieth century. Some of their products included, gas and steam blowing engines for blast furnaces, forging presses, shears, cut and machine-molded gears, and various types of rolls used in rolling mills. The plant, located about six miles from Pittsburgh in West Homestead, Pennsylvania, covered more than twenty acres and employed approximately three thousand employees, most of whom were skilled mechanics. Some of the buildings, all of which were fireproof, that occupied the site included machine shops, forge shops, a pattern shop, an iron foundry, a steel and brass foundry, and laboratories.
