Description
Brashear High School was named in honor of Dr. John A. Brashear, the beloved “Uncle John” of Pittsburgh. Brashear, an amateur astronomer who designed lenses for telescopes around the world, was chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh. The original building, erected in 1874, was destroyed by fire and another was built in 1899. That school was closed in 1956. The present Brashear High School was built by the Pittsburgh Public School District in 1976 to comply with state orders to desegregate. The district closed two high schools and bused white and black students to the new school. It now draws students from Hazelwood, the Hill District, the South Side, and some South Hills neighborhoods including Beechview, Brookline, and Mount Washington. Brashear High School is located at 590 Crane Avenue and occupies about 400,000 square feet on a tract of former farmland.
