Description
Construction of the Philip Murray Elementary School began on May 12, 1954, and was completed in September 1955. The school was named in honor of Philip Murray, a former Board member and labor leader. The school, located at 800 Rectenwald Street, serves the Pittsburgh communities of Carrick, Mount Oliver, and Saint Clair Village. Philip Murray Elementary School, designed by architect H.L. Heilman at a cost of approximately $1.3 million (including equipment), at the time contained 14 classrooms, a library, an auditorium, a double gymnasium, a kindergarten, an all-purpose room, medical and general offices, and two teachers’ rooms.
