Description
Architects Rigaumont & Steen designed the John Minadeo Elementary School, located at 6502 Lilac Street, in 1957. It was named in honor of John Minadeo, a 17 year old school guard who was killed in the line of duty by a runaway automobile on October 7, 1954. The Minadeo School replaced Roosevelt Elementary, which opened in 1906. The Roosevelt School was a fireproof brick building with twelve classrooms, two home economics, and industrial training rooms. Originally, only five of the classrooms were utilized, however by 1915, the school had become overcrowded and an additional wing was added on to the building. Due to the steady growth in enrollment, the Pittsburgh School Board decided to build a larger school at a new location in 1930 that eventually became the John Minadeo Elementary School, which currently serves the Pittsburgh communities of Squirrel Hill, Greenfield, and Homewood.
