Content Description

A finding aid for the documents and materials of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, Squirrel Hill Branch.

Arrangement

Each of the collection's six series is arranged by subject largely according to the original order of the files. All but the last are concerned with the branch in general, and include files on planning and construction, budget materials and branch events. The last of the series contains circulation records of the Children's Department.

Biographical / Historical

The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, Squirrel Hill Branch was dedicated on December 13, 1972 on the corner of Forbes and Murray Avenues. Its centrality within Pittsburgh's largest neighborhood and convenience to the residents of adjacent neighborhoods such as Shadyside and Point Breeze made it one of the most anticipated and widest-serving branches in the Carnegie system. The 1.5 million dollar project incorporated a spacious parking level, street side commercial space, gallery areas and meeting rooms.

Planning began in 1967 but was periodically stymied by conflicts over location, labor, and funding as well as shipping delays and antidiscrimination demonstrations. The project was nevertheless championed by community interest, local civic groups and business owners eager for revitalization in the Forbes and Murray area.

The building has undergone renovations twice since its construction. The first of these in 1987 amended conflicts for blind and handicapped patrons. A second, full-scale renovation was completed in 2002.
