Description
Contains a detailed review of the history, age, and ownership of 843 Western Avenue, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The home was constructed no later than 1860, and probably as early as about 1850. The house was designed in a transitional architectural style that incorporated elements of the Greek Revival and Italianate styles. The Irwin family, who owned property on Western Avenue between Brighton Road and Allegheny Avenue, was responsible for the construction of the building. The Irwin family then lived in a mansion facing Brighton Road, and never occupied 843 Western Avenue. In 1860, the Irwin family sold the building to George Elliot, who used it as a rental property. His tenants included the family of Benjamin Oppenheimer, a merchant tailor. The building has now had a total of 17 owners.
