  • View of the Brownsville Hospital's east wing. The hospital was chartered in 1910 by a group of citizens headed by E. M. Bowman. The charter stated, "The hospital is to care for those injured in accidents in the coal mines, coke ovens, railroads, and other industrial enterprises, regardless of race, sect, or creed." The facility was completed in 1916 on the corner of Fifth Avenue and Church Street.
