Description
View of the "Monument of Tranquility" overlooking the "Plot of the Unknown" in Grandview Cemetery, the burial site for 777 unidentified victims of the 1889 Johnstown Flood. With a death toll of 2,209 people, the disaster was the greatest loss of civilian life in the United States prior to the attacks of September 11, 2001. Ninety-nine entire families died, including 396 children. The spouses of 124 women and 198 men died in the flood. Bodies continued to be found as late as 1911 and as far away as Cincinnati, OH. The Plot of the Unknown is the final resting place for 750 victims of the flood whose bodies were never identified.
