Description
In this clip, an overhead crane removes a heated steel ingot from a vertical soaking pit and places it on a railcar. Inside the soaking pit, the steel reaches a uniform temperature, which is necessary before it can be rolled. Allegheny Ludlum (now known as Allegheny Technologies) is known for its stainless steel and specialty metal products. One of the companies more exotic products was a stainless steel car, one of which is on display at the Heinz History Center.
