Description
Records include correspondence, course descriptions, reports, scrapbooks, student records and business records. The bulk of the records consist of the course description and guidelines maintained by the Curriculum Division. Individual school records are an eclectic mix of materials with Parent-Teacher Association documents from each school being the majority of these records., The Pittsburgh Public Schools began operating as an official institution in 1835 with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania acting in a supervisory role. In 1855, the city took over total control and established a Central Board of Directors representing the schools in each ward. This system remained until 1911 when a court appointed board of 15 managers oversaw the daily functions of the schools. This method of management came to be recognized as a model for other cities. The Pittsburgh Public Schools went through major building booms to keep up with a growing enrollment during the 1930s and 1940s. Student integration was the primary activity for the school system through the 1960s and 1970s., Process, inventory available MSS #117 December 1994 Stepehn Doell.
