The Frederick T. Gretton online collection contains images from 1881 through 1908 showing the Jones and Laughlin steel mill on the South Side, including a wide variety of scenes from blast furnaces. Images were selected that depict scenes of Pittsburgh's industrial heritage, including industrial workers, industrial structures, river scenes, neighborhoods, and municipal buildings.
What’s in the entire collection?
The collection, held by the Library & Archives at the Senator John Heinz History Center, comprises 50 images taken between 1881 and 1908 at the Jones and Laughlin steel mill. Most of the photographs are of company buildings and the employees who worked in them.
About Frederick T. Gretton
Frederick Thomas Gretton was the first chief chemist of Jones and Laughlin Steel Corporation. He took numerous photographs of his workplace and city surroundings.
