The Allegheny Conference on Community Development (ACCD) online collection contains images from 1875 to 1981 showing the construction and destruction of many Downtown structures and neighborhood buildings. The collection also includes many scenes at various airports.
Images were selected that exemplify themes of rebirth, modernization, and quality of life improvements for the Pittsburgh region during the post-World War II Renaissance period.
What's in the entire collection?
The collection, held by the Library & Archives at the Senator John Heinz History Center, comprises over 10,000 images taken between about 1875 and 1981, which visually document the variety of work addressed by the ACCD. Such projects included urban renewal such as Gateway Center and Point State Park, which changed the landscape and skyline of the city of Pittsburgh, as well as large-scale building projects throughout the county such as the development and construction of Pittsburgh International Airport.
About the Allegheny Conference on Community Development
Initiated as the Allegheny Conference on Post-War Community Planning in 1943 as an organization that would do research and study on the region to create a community improvement plan, the Allegheny Conference on Community Development later developed into a multifaceted cooperative agency.
