Description
An evening performance of the Civic Light Opera (CLO) at the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh’s Lower Hill neighborhood. The CLO was founded in 1946 with the financial support of department store magnate Edgar Kaufmann. The CLO first performed at Pitt Stadium on the University of Pittsburgh campus in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh. In 1958, ground was broken for the CLO’s new home, the Civic Arena. The following year the CLO moved into a nearby tent known as the Melody Tent for three years awaiting the completion of the Civic Arena. When the CLO moved to the Civic Arena in 1962, it was a smash hit with revues by Carol Burnett, Jerry Lewis, and Harry Belafonte. The Civic Arena is now known as Mellon Arena and is the home venue for the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League. In the early 1970s, the CLO moved once again to Heinz Hall in downtown Pittsburgh, and in 1987, Benedum Center for the Performing Arts became the fifth and present home of the CLO.
