Description
Students Brenda Johnson and Sharon James modeling their clothes at a fashion show. The Clothing and Textiles course, offered as part of the Pittsburgh public schools home economics curriculum, enabled students to develop various skills including, identifying and classifying fibers used in textiles according to their source and physical characteristics; demonstrating knowledge in the care and use of fabrics based on their fiber content and method of manufacture; researching ongoing and current government standards regarding textile labeling; outlining career opportunities available in the fashion and clothing industry, selecting appropriate patterns according to body type and physical measurements; operating a sewing machine, identifying pressing equipment according to use; and constructing a sample garment and determine its cost.
