Description
View looking from the lawn of Soldiers & Sailors National Military Museum & Memorial showing the exterior of the Syria Mosque. Located between Bigelow Boulevard and Lytton Avenue, the Syria Mosque was designed by Huel, Schmidt, & Holmes. It was dedicated on October 26, 1916 and demolition began on August 27, 1991. The Syria Mosque was home to the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Pittsburgh Opera, and served as a popular venue for concerts, artistic programs, and graduation ceremonies. Pink Floyd, Eric Clapton, Jascha Heifetz, Sarah Vaughan, Duke Ellington, John F. Kennedy, and Malcolm X. among many others graced the stage during its 75 year history.
