Description
Maudelena Johnson was the wife of photographer Luther Johnson, who maintained a studio and residence on Centre Avenue from the 1930s until c. 1970. She was an influential music teacher and choir director in the city for many years. Between 1959 and 1965 she led the Treble Clef Choir, a black women's choral group that raised scholarship money for black students. The woman seated next to her may be Mary Dee (1912-1964), a Pittsburgh disc jockey/radio personality from 1948-1956. This is a detail from an image that shows several women in evening dress gathered around the piano.
