Description
K. Leroy Irvis in his studio working on his wood carvings. He works at a small table with a rack of chisels on the wall and to his side. A mallet rests on the table. He is carving a portrait relief, and small, free standing carvings of human heads and dogs stand to one side. An official with the Pittsburgh Urban League in 1940s and 1950s, in 1958 Irvis became the first African American to be elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. He was re-elected to that seat for 15 consecutive terms. Irvis is currently the Distinguished Presidential Scholar at Temple University.
