Description
Five young African American sailors pose for a group portrait in the Harris Studio. The use of black troops in combat initially excluded African Americans in the United States Navy; they were limited to the position of Mess Attendants until 1944 (during World War II). Uniform dates to World War II, ca. 1940-1946.
